Save the world, one drop at a time

"INDIA and China at war - over water."

Imagine this headline, loud and clear, in your favourite morning paper.

Sounds far-fetched? Ecological experts say in the next 50 years, countries may be reduced to war over the natural resource key to human survival.

The danger is nearer than we all think.

That mandatory glass of cool water after a hot, sveltering day might be harder to come by.

Only 1 percent of total water on our planet is available for drinking.

The world human population has tripled in the last century, and the consumption of fresh water has increased sevenfold.

The amount of water available for each human has fallen by 40% over the period of four decades.

Two out of five inhabitants of the planet experience difficulty in obtaining water.
Around 200 million Indians do not have access to safe and clean water.

United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) predicts that India will be severly stressed for water by 2025.

World Wildlife Fund (WWF), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) reports: the world's top water supplier rivers flowing through every continent are drying out threatening water shortages.

Do we want to reach the stage of war soon?

"The war has already begun." Soumyabrata Rahut, Climate and Energy Expert of Green Peace India says. "Situation is getting worse by day.
Unless we fight the ignorance about water conservation, water shortage will become more stark.

States like Chennai are already suffering gravely due to water shortages and soon it just might be the entire India."

Why so?

Soumyabrata explains: with more and more concrete and hard surfaces being spread throughout the land with urbanization, the rain water cannot percolate into the ground.

This leads to lesser ground water.

"This not only affects the urban places but also rural ones. When there is less of ground water, sea water seeps into its place which is dangerous for farming," he adds.

Dont we have to give a thought about it??
